If you ever find yourself craving a break from the city’s fast pace, Rainforest Treehouse Café at Kulai, Johor can be a refreshing retreat nestled in nature.
Surrounded by lush greenery, this cozy spot lets you slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy simple pleasures—good food, a scenic view, and the calming sounds of nature.

I visited this hidden gem and wanted to share my experience with you. There’s actually more to this place than just the café! In fact, if you love the idea of fully immersing yourself in a nature retreat, there’s a Homestay further up the hill. Unfortunately, I didn’t book a stay, and the access is strictly for guests - so I've no pictures at all for the Rainforest Treehouse Homestay, but it’s an interesting concept, especially if you’re looking for an interesting getaway. Let me take you through my visit, starting with the café itself.
A Café That Feels Like a Sanctuary
Even if you’re only here for a short visit, the café alone can do wonders for your mood. There’s something about sitting amidst towering trees, feeling the cool breeze, listening to the gentle breeze as it rustles through the trees and taking in the peaceful surroundings that makes you forget about stress, even if just for a while.
Just close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let the fresh air rejuvenate your senses. Order some food, savor the flavors, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.
It had been a while since my last visit, so I don’t quite remember the exact names of the dishes I ordered, but I do remember how enjoyable the experience was. The food was delicious, and the setting made it even better.
Chilling here with my best friends, chatting away with no rush—it was one of those moments that just felt right.
More Than Just a Café
What makes this place unique is the little surprises along the way.
Before even reaching the café, within the area, we passed by a traditional bakery where the warm, inviting scent of fresh bread filled the air. There was also a honey stall, though no one seemed to be tending it at the time.
The whole place has this rustic charm, with rock, wooden or earth trail stairs leading up to different levels, making it feel like an adventure just exploring it.
During my visit, I also learned something really heartwarming. There’s actually a charity-run school up on the hill for students who can’t afford education. While the public isn’t allowed to enter, just knowing that this place supports a meaningful cause made me appreciate it even more.
Exploring the Nearby Waterfall
Since the area is quite secluded, it seems like many people combine their visit with a trip to Gunung Pulai Waterfall, which is nearby.
If you love nature and don’t mind a bit of a hike, it’s definitely worth checking out. The walk uphill can be quite a workout, so bring a towel—you’ll likely break a sweat! If you plan to dip your feet in the water, don’t forget to bring extra clothes.
One important thing to note: if you’re bringing water, avoid disposable plastic bottles. They won’t allow them past the entrance as part of their efforts to keep the area clean and free from litter. A reusable bottle is your best option.
Getting There
Because of its secluded location, driving is the most convenient way to get here. Booking a Grab or cab for the return trip can be tricky, as many drivers are hesitant to make the long journey in. The road leading to the café is quite a distance from the main road, so it’s a good idea to plan your transport in advance. We struggled to get a Grab, waiting for nearly an hour before finally reaching out to our backup transport option.
Whether you're looking for a quiet retreat, a cozy spot to reflect, or just a place to enjoy good food with an incredible view.
