Ubin's Bak Chang: Taste of Homemade Rice Dumplings from Pulau Ubin


Like many traditional festivals that celebrate with its specialty food. It has been customary during the dumpling festival to enjoy rice dumplings as a memorial to the famous pioneer poet of ancient China, Qu Yuan (340-278 B.C.). Dumpling festival aka Dragon Boat Festival which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar said to be Qu Yuan's day of death. It has been a tradition that lasts for a long time and over many decades, and many passionate cooks could make wonders with these traditional rice dumplings.


In this century, everyone who has tried Rice Dumplings aka Bak Chang (Zong Zi 粽子) is impressed with the delicacy of this snack, with the faint scent of the leaves imprinted on the skin of the dumplings. In fact, dumplings are now consumed throughout the year by anyone who enjoys it and knows how to create it.

Bak Chang is made of glutinous rice dumplings stuffed with various fillings, wrapped in bamboo or lotus leaves. They are commonly seen in triangle-shaped and it can be sweet and savory. During this festive season, we may see many families buying Bak Chang at their nearby stalls or their regular go-to Bak Chang stalls. During Circuit Breaker, many of the f&b stalls are not known to be open or whether if they supply delivery. 


The good thing is, many traditional home-based chefs have also initiated their knowledge and expertise to serve you right from home. Mr. Mark Chua has also missed his late grandma's Bak Chang & her other culinary. His late grandma lived in Pulau Ubin, and back then Mark would visit her at her restaurant (Uncle's Tan Kelong) to eat and pick up some culinary skills from her. 


Since young, Mr. Mark Chua was inspired by his late grandma and got into interest with cooking and that started his culinary learning journey, up till now he is a Chef for about 10 years. With COVID 19 Circuit Breaker situation, Mark has started sharing this tasty Bak Chang named after the memories in Pulau Ubin, Ubin's Bak Chang (乌敏岛肉粽). He would love to share the taste of Grandma with everyone who loves Bak Chang as much as him.
